Lentils are highly nutritious legumes that offer many health benefits. The high levels of soluble fibre in lentils help to reduce blood cholesterol. Studies show that high fibre foods like lentils minimise the risk of heart disease, help prevent digestive disorders and stabilise blood sugar levels; this can be especially helpful for people with diabetes, insulin resistance or hypoglycemia. 

Despite being packed with potency with beneficial nutrients like minerals, protein, vitamins and fibre, lentils have virtually no fat and are low in calories. Therefore, they are a great addition to weight loss diets.

Organic Farming: What difference does it make?

In general terms, organic is a production process of growing food without using artificial chemicals, pesticides, genetically modified organisms (GMO), antibiotics or hormones. For the cultivation of organic farming, natural fertilisers like manure have been utilised.

Studies have proven that organic food is more wholesome and rich in vitamins as compared to non-organic food. Typically all organic foods contain a good amount of vitamin C, zinc and iron. Organic foods also have a higher level of antioxidants (almost up to 69%) and micronutrients.

The nitrate level in organic crops is less than 30%, reducing the risk of having certain types of cancer. People who consume organic food daily have a lower risk of allergens, eczema, sound reproduction system, and strong immunity.

Why Choosing Organic Lentils Matters

While lentils, organic or not, are very rich in nutritional value, organic lentils are considered the safer alternative since they are grown without desiccation. Desiccation is the progress of applying agents or herbicides – most commonly glyphosate (otherwise known as RoundUp) – to crops during harvest to accelerate the harvesting process. It makes all of the crops dry and easier to cut down.

In addition to glyphosate, other chemicals may include paraquat and diquat. Since these herbicides are administered during harvest, exposure to these chemicals is even greater than typical herbicide use.

Studies have shown that glyphosate may have harmful effects on human health. Researchers have also discovered that it is linked to several serious diseases, including hypertension, diabetes, obesity, senile dementia, inflammatory disease, renal failure, thyroid, and liver cancer.  

Glyphosate has been found to have a significantly negative effect on the digestive system. It can potentially destroy the microorganisms that live in the intestines and impede the body’s ability to absorb nutrients.

Organic lentils assure not only wholesome and nutritious diets but also protection against chemicals that could harm immunity or longevity.

The increase in import and production of lentils indicate the gradual rise in consumption of lentils in Europe. Around 70% of European lentil production volume occurs in Spain and France.
